Madagascar is a famously unique island destination, housing a treasure trove of biodiversity, beautiful alien landscapes, diverse culture and a selection of exclusive lodges.
Madagascar is located off the southeastern coast of Africa, and is home to some of the worlds most iconic species including the lemur and enormous baobabs. However, this secluded island is bursting with beautiful parks and is home to 5% of the world’s species. Below the warm waves of the Indian Ocean is a colourful underwater world with bright coral gardens, tropical fish and larger species such as whales that can be spotted from the coastline.
Each corner of Madagascar has its distinctive draw. To the northeast is Leven’s Archipelago where you can find Miavana – which is equal parts exclusive and dedicated to preserving its natural environment. In the north, you will also find excellent national parks and reserves such as Amber Mountain National Park, Ankarana National Park and Anjajavy Private Nature Reserve. As well as the port city of Diego Suarez which showcases the area’s melting pot of cultures and history.
To the west is Morondova and the famous Avenue des Baobabs, as well as Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park – which is a great spot to see lemurs jumping amongst the unique ‘tsingy’s’ or limestone karst rock formations. To the East are various national parks including Masoala Forest and Andasibe-Mantadia, where you will find a verdant endemic rainforest. It is in this region that you will also find Nosy Boraha or Île Sainte-Marie where there is a pirates cemetery. Finally to the south is Isalo National Park and cultural hubs like Fort Dauphin or Tolagnaro which was the first French settlement in Madagascar.
April to October
As April approaches, the rains dwindle. The best time to explore nature parks and enjoy the beaches in Madagascar is from May to October when the weather is drier and temperatures are cooler. Humpback whales can also be spotted off the coast from June to September and lemur breeding season starts in October.
November & December
With temperatures heightening, the rains tend to break between November and December. Wildlife viewing continues through these months with lemur breeding in full swing but sunny beach days are likely to see some rainy interludes.
January to March
These months are categorised by heavy rains and possible cyclones. Many parks may be closed during this time.
