Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda is situated in one of the oldest forests in Africa, boasting a tremendous amount of endemic species and the opportunity to witness chimpanzees while going primate trekking.

A mountainous region in the Albertine Rift, Nyungwe forest is home to rare primates including chimpanzees, Colobus, mangabey and L’Hoest monkeys, as well as other shy mammals such as the Congo Clawless Otter and Cerval Cat – not to mention over 300 bird species, 120 butterfly species and more than 1,000 plant species, 140 of which are orchids.

A range of walking and hiking trails wind through the lush surroundings, to Isumo waterfall, Kamiranzovu swamps and waterfall, and across a suspended sky bridge that offers a canopy walk with outstanding views of the verdant forest. Other activities include bush picnics, wildlife walks, and of course the famed primate trekking.

Bordering the park is a range of tea plantations and estates, the standout ones being Gisovu in the north and Gisakura in the west, where you will also find a habituated troop of Colobus Monkeys. Situated on Gisakura is an eco-friendly and highly luxurious lodge, which offers a range of exciting activities and fantastic dining experiences.
