The Central Kalahari

In the heart of Botswana stretches the remote and enormous Kalahari Desert. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a section of this vast landscape that is home to a range of unique wildlife along with the incredible ancient traditions of the San Bushmen.

There are three main parks within the desert, namely the Central Kalahari Reserve – which is one of the largest reserves in Africa at 52,800 km² – the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Khutse Game Reserve. As such a remote location, the various luxurious lodges that are speckled around this desert ensure the utmost privacy and quiet escape.

One of the best ways to witness the Kalahari is under a blanket of stars on a sleep-out or with a San guide to learn the secret riches of this seemingly inhospitable landscape. However, other fantastic experiences include wellness escapes, exploring on sand bikes or walking safaris – not to mention classic game drives.

Drenched in tones of ochre and sienna, the various pans, including the famous Deception Pan, and ancient river beds give way to grassland plains and semi-sandy scrubland. Amongst the savannah and prickly vegetation is a one-of-a-kind ecosystem populated by various out-of-this-world wildlife. From the rare black-maned lion to the oryx and small creatures including bat-eared fox.
